SNM&SAM

The trip to Singapore National Museum and Singapore Arts Museum was not the same as my expectations at all. Actually, the two well-known Museums are very different from those museums in China. Although it was in hurry and a bit messy, I was attracted by the creative and historical displays.
As we arrived at SNM, our group members could not find the entrance to the history gallery. So we chose a way to another direction and entered one of the living galleries by chance. Its atmosphere was dark and mysterious, which was utterly different from those magnificent bright galleries in Chinese museums. However, other galleries looked brighter. The historic showpieces enabled us to see the change of Singaporean lifestyles, including food, clothing and entertainment. Especially in the display called Beauty in Black, all the eighteen dresses were black. They showed the trend of fashion from 1950s to 2000s. Black is one of my favourate colours, for its long-lasting beauty. It seems never out of fashion.
When it comes to SAM, to be frank, without a guide, we could hardly understand the meanings of the showpieces. However, the beauty and fantasy of the works of arts drew my attention. Some were bloody and frightening but full of deep meanings. They reflected the cruel facts in the reality. I became aware of the freedom and intrepidity of Singaporean artists. The building of SAM is large and grandiose. In the end of the trip, I even lost my way and got into a gallery showing the theme of death. It was really a frightening experience…Fortunately, I found my way out and caught the bus with others’ help.
After the trip, I walked past the two museums twice. Every time I passed by, I felt like visiting them again. Some day if my parents or friends from China come to Singapore, I will lead them to SNM and SAM~

  2. Agree with you, I found some of the showpieces in the SAM thrilling and confusing. It was kind of fun that when we walked pass a block which had nothing diferent from one downtown we suddenly discovery the sign read "SNM".

  3. Some pictures and symbols are pretty bloody and harsh, but they contain lots of meanings

  4. The same with you. The exhibition is really different from that in China. Maybe they think blood and death is a kind of art. It seems that we still have a lot to learn about Singapore.
